"Light Gravure" as final graduation project

Drawing of the engraving machine

Finally, an engraving machine

The two students, Markus Fey and Joachim Schrott, have almost completed their four-year advanced study at the technical college for automation technology at Mainz. Their advanced course ends with their final practical work. The assignment of the Mainz technical college was to design and implement a CNC-controlled three-axis machine in portal design.

The basic idea of the students Fey and Schrott was to engrave typefaces on wood or plastic. The two students resorted to a CAD program for the planning and designing of their machine. The technical designing of their machine was essentially simplified and speeded up by this program.

The guide elements and e-chain® systems used in the engraving machine came from the igus® GmbH. The project team decided on the igus® products as they completely corresponded with the requirement profile.

General advantages of the igus® products are:

Low weight

Corrosion resistance

Protection against weathering and dirt accumulation

Freedom from maintenance and lubrication

Criteria for the selection of guide systems

X axis

The project team of Fey and Schrott decided on the drylin® T Mini guide system for the x axis.

Main criteria for the selection of the guide system:

Compact type

Supported profile guide rail system

Subsequent integration in existing construction

Y axis

The students used drylin® W guide system for the y axis.

Main criteria for the selection of the guide system:

Supported rail system

Low costs

Very compact, flat design

Good absorption of loads in all directions

Z axis

The project team selected drylin® R guide system for the z axis.

Selection criteria for the e-chain® systems

The used e-chain® systems were determined according to the available installation space. Thereby the length, width, height and the bending radius of the e-chain® systems play a vital role.

The students Fey and Schrott decided for an enclosed system that protects the cable from dirt and damage. The zipper system was chosen to facilitate the easy insertion of the cable. This enables the insertion of the cable after the assembly of the e-chain® systems.
